Mental Health in Romania
Estuar
is the leading mental health charity in Romania. It focuses on provided
sheltered housing and day care for the mentally ill. They are a significant
lobbying influence for the rights of those with mental illness or disability.
They run five drop in Day Centres, and provide supported living allowing
twelve adults with severe disability to lead independent lives. These people would
otherwise be alone and destitute on the streets of Bucharest. Estuar
also run five arts and crafts work shops and regional advocacy and support
services. We help them in various ways, particuarly with a contribution
to their core running costs and sponsoring of staff.

Our "Cooking Time Project" at Estuar's Day Centre provides
a hot meal twice a week for 45 of the centre's users with mental health problems
or mental disabilty. The beneficiaries are closely involved in the preparation
and cooking and so learn new skills and to work together in a team as well as
benefiting from a nutritious and sociable occasion." Read

Their main funders are the UK's Tudor Trust. In comparison
to their generous six figure annual budget, our four figure funding
is very modest. However we feel fortunate to be able to support
this excellent initiative.
